What Happened 100 Years Ago?
There is nothing like spicing up the chiller industry with interesting and relevant history. Many young adults cannot imagine life without color TV, cell phones and the celebrations that include beer, wine, and liquors.
A lot has happened in the last 100 years. For anyone in the distilling craft, January 16th is a day that changed life in the United States one hundred years ago. As found on Distillery Trail, “January 16, 1919, the U.S. Votes Itself Dry.” An interesting history followed with the Eighteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.
1920 and 1933 – What Happened?
Distilleries didn’t shut down. They went underground. As found on The Guardian, “How Prohibition backfired and gave America an era of gangsters and speakeasies” reveals that underground establishments flourished. Alcohol became big business for those who defied the law, but these illegal bars catered to everyone. Not to mention the “bootleggers” that prospered from their hidden distilleries around the country.
With the failure of Prohibition recognized, “the American dry spell lasted until the 21st Amendment grants states the right to control alcohol.” As of “December 5, 133, Utah became the final state needed for ratification.”
Step Way Back in Time Before 1919
More interesting history of distillation takes us back many, many centuries before our time as found on VinePair. The distilling process was actually a result of alchemy. As reported, there was evidence of crude-made liquors before alchemy. Liquors are known to have been made from “rice and mare’s milk in Asia as far back as 800 B.C.”
Fast forward to “the 8th century A.D. that an Arabic alchemist designed the alembic pot still.” It was this innovative “contraption that allowed for the effective distillation of alcohol” for medicinal purposes. It took centuries for distilled alcohol to become a recreation past-time.
