Three Excellent Types of Cannabis Extraction Methods For Quality Products

The flower industry is booming in North America, and the, “green rush”, has encouraged people to utilize creative ways to extract cannabinoids from the flower plant. The innovation that we have seen in the industry is pretty amazing. JC Younger can help you set up your flower extraction facility. With the green rush taking place across the country, brands are creating new products to serve a wider range of new customers. These consumer brands are using flower extraction methods in new and inventive ways that require streamlined chemical extraction processes. Different products require different cannabinoid compounds. We are seeing more cannabinoids being discovered and becoming popular, i.e. CBG, CBN, and Delta-8. In this blog, we cover three flower extraction methods  that are commonly used in the CBD, hemp, and flower industry: 1) Ethanol Extraction This process is known for creating some of the purest and best-tasting concentrates. Ethanol is a very efficient solvent, so extraction can be done at room temperature, super cold conditions, or right at the boiling point. The ethanol solvent binds with chlorophyll, which can make the product taste bitter. Cannabis extraction method using Ethanol extraction can isolate cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavanoids so your product. Ethanol Extraction Process: 1. Heat your feed to remove chlorophyll. 2. Boil ethanol and catch the alcohol in a cooled- coil. 3. Drip the alcohol through your plant material until it is soaked through and leaches out the THC, terpenoids, and other goodies. After this, you have to filter the flower from the liquid. This can be done in the machine that did the first two steps. Often, they will have a rotary system that spins the materials until the plant is completely extracted. The fun part is separating out the ethanol from the compounds you want. Since ethanol has a low boiling point, this is fairly easy. Your chiller can winterize the product, keeping the temperature very low for a while in a vacuum so that the solvent drops out. 2) Alcohol Tincture Extraction This is a basic Cannabis extraction method that will leave you with the tarry honey oil. It’s often done by small scale operations or by people at home, but you can scale up if you want. The process: 1. Treat your feed to decarboxylation, meaning heat your material to around 250 degrees Fahrenheit for a prolonged period of time. 2. Soak your treated feed in the water. 3. Drain it and replace the water with pure, high-proof alcohol 4. Stir this together and then put it through a strainer. 5. Heat the resulting liquid to separate out the alcohol and filter out the plant. You will wind up with the classic oil you remember from your youth. 3) Carbon Dioxide (Supercritical Fluid Extraction) Supercritical carbon dioxide (C02) is the gas we all exhale after it has been treated to 73bar (1060psi) at 33.1 degrees Celsius. This turns it into a material that spreads like gas but flows like a liquid. For flower extraction methods for quality products, Supercritical C02 extraction is often considered the gold standard because it will take out all 500 compounds that you could possibly want to utilize in your flower extract products. 1. Have your extractor full of CO2 properly calibrated. 2. Feed the plant material into it. The supercritical carbon dioxide will soak the feed and leach out 90 to 95% of all the compounds. The next step will be to winterize your product. How long you do this will depend on the products you are making. If you do it for a short time, you will wind up with wax in your product and, while it will make shatter just fine, it won’t be good for vape liquids. As you can see, you have a lot of choices when it comes to flower extraction methods for quality products, and many of them require chillers. JC Younger is proud to say that we can customize chillers to your Cannabis extraction method, and we can rent them to your company for anything from weeks to years. If you are looking to get a chiller for your process, contact us.

The Common Parameters for Cannabis Industry Chillers and How Industrial Chillers are Vital to Every Step As mentioned in past blog posts by JC Younger, there are various methods that can be used to extract cannabinoids from the flower plant. Whether you are extracting hemp or flower, there are common parameters that need to be controlled. These include temperature, pressure or vacuum, source material, and solvent feed rate. During The Extraction Process Temperature Must be Consistent and Repeatable Temperature control while using any of the common flower extraction processes, such as ethanol or CO2, is critical. During the process of chilling the extraction agent, temperatures can reach negative 45 Fahrenheit or lower, and then it is compressed until it is liquefied. There is only one efficient way to reach this temperature and control it, and that is with a chiller. For high-quality results, JC Younger recommends that a custom flower extraction chiller unit be designed to meet unique temperature profile requirements, in comparison to a standard piece of equipment that is not built for the flower extraction industry. According to Marijuana Venture, “temperature control is necessary throughout all the steps in the process, but precise extraction chamber temperature control is absolutely essential to managing final product quality and characteristics.” It’s understandable that absolute temperature control must also be replicable from one batch to another. The standard temperature control variance must be within 0.275 degrees Celsius for consistency across product results, according to Marijuana Venture. Initial Purification Process Requires Temperature Control For the final product purification, dewaxing and “winterization” removes waxes and undesired elements. The separation process depends upon cooling the extract down. Decarboxylation Activates the CBD/THC Components with Temperature Control Another step, decarboxylation, is necessary for stimulating the CBD/THC components. This process requires “carefully heating an extracted solution to release the carboxyl ring group (COOH).” Distillation Process for Final Purification Depends upon Temperature Control Again, “closely controlled temperature” plays a role in the final production of a high-quality CBD and THC oils. Extremely high temperatures are necessary for this final purification process. Solvent Removal is Accomplished with Temperature Control “The final step in the process is solvent removal, accomplished in a separate, external cold trap, which is also temperature controlled with a chiller.” And in some productions, “crystallization” may be needed to separate THC and CBD, requiring temperature adjustment and control. Closed-Loop Extraction Chillers for Pure Cannabis Concentrate Production

At J.C. Younger (JCY), we have been manufacturing and remanufacturing industrial chillers for an array of applications, since 1956. We are also well-versed in oil extraction, and we are now known for the chillers we are manufacturing for the dewaxing process. Oil Classification As defined in The Free Dictionary, oil is “an unctuous, combustible substance that is liquid, or easily liquefiable, on warming, and is not miscible with water, but is soluble in ether.” Oils fall under the classifications of “animal, mineral, or vegetable.” How each behaves in the heating process, they further divide into the classifications of “volatile or fixed.” While volatile oils are those “that evaporate readily,” are present in “aromatic plants,” and ” fixed (also known as fatty) oils, are not volatile. The fixed oils do “not evaporate on warming.” These oils have “a mixture of fatty acids and their esters.” While some refer to them as “solid, semisolid, and liquid, others refer to them as “drying, semidrying, and nondrying.” Fixed (Fatty) Oils An educational resource, from the University of California (UCR), will help you can further understand the different classifications of oils: drying, semidrying, and nondrying. Drying oils, “absorb oxygen and on exposure dry into thin elastic films,” making them significant to “paint and varnish industries.” One of these oils is the “linseed oil” predominantly found in “paints, varnishes, linoleum, soft soap, and printer’s ink.” Semidrying oils, “absorb oxygen slowly and only in small amounts.” While some of these oils “are edible, others are used as illuminants or in making soap and candles.” “Corn oil,” as so many of us known, is found in margarine, when “refined for human consumption.” And, in its crude form, corn oil “has industrial uses such as the manufacture of rubber substitutes, paints, and soaps.” Nondrying oils, “remain liquid at room temperature and do not form a film,” and these types of oils “are edible and may be used in soap and lubricants.” We’re all very familiar with “olive oil.” The Oil Extraction Process Oil extraction methods go back to the time of the Egyptians, and “extraction of fatty oils varies,” as UCR reports. Extracted oils can “be further purified,” which makes them safer for human consumption and use. That is the removal of unwanted waxes. Waxes As the UCR resource explains, “waxes usually occur on the epidermis of leaves and fruits where they serve to prevent water loss through transpiration.” In the use of oils for commercial and medicinal purposes, it is necessary to remove these waxes. Temperature control is one of the critical processes in wax removal. A expert-constructed chiller is the solution to temperature control, from sub-zero temps and above. Dewaxing with a “JCY” Closed-Loop Extraction Chiller for Pure Cannabis Concentrates Some may believe that winterization and dewaxing are interchangeable process terms, but in the growing industry of flower concentrates, there is a difference, as found on PotGuide.com. “With a heightened importance placed on clean and pure concentrate production, many processors are now making sure to remove any undesired plant lipids and waxes from their final products.” Winterization is a well-known process in the flower production process, but technology is now making dewaxing a favorable process. The dewaxing process offers “less steps involved, and the flower extract can be fully dewaxed all within the closed-loop system – removing the need to add additional steps such as winterization.” The team at J.C. Younger is excited to offer the best “customizable chiller solutions to meet the needs of any flower operation.” We do believe the dewaxing process, using the “closed-loop extraction system, is the safest way,” to eliminate exposure to undesirable outside elements. It is our mission to deliver the best in chiller solutions, and we’re here to make sure you get the best solution for your application, especially when it comes to removing waxes. Call us to find out more about everything we offer, along with the best chillers in the industry. How Chillers Are Used in Successful Plant Cultivation

Commercial-grade chillers have received much attention in recent years because of the flower cultivation market, but they are also used in many types of plant development. In this post, we want to explore the technology that is found in chillers used for flower production and for growing other plants. Hopefully, this treatment of the subject will help readers to rethink how to prepare plants for the market and to ensure that live specimens and harvested plants are not inadvertently acquiring pests or toxins that would render them unsellable to end consumers especially because of a lack of environmental controls. That would be bad for business. What’s more, renting commercial chillers from J.C. Younger instead of buying them and having them break down on you can also help you meet specific energy usage goals. What a Plant Cultivation Chiller Includes We do have an extensive website that includes photos of the different kinds of chillers for lease and for sale from J.C. Younger, but we think it’s helpful to explore the mechanisms that commercial chillers include. We take pride in ensuring that the chillers we rent/sell to clients in the agricultural sector are reliable and built to ensure the highest quality in all of their cultivation processes. Looking at Chiller Design We understand that flower growers and developers of other kinds of plants for the commercial market (think supplements like açaí berry and cranberry) may be inclined to choose indoor cultivation. If you will grow your plants in a greenhouse or completely indoors, you will need to be able to completely control all of the environmental conditions. If you are operating a grow house in a very hot climate like Florida or Puerto Rico, for example,  you may need commercial chillers to lower the internal air temperature significantly below the ambient temperature. If you are operating in a place like Colorado, your facility can face rapid shifts in temperature, from extremely cold to warm in the same day (i.e. -40F degrees to 75 degrees in less than 24 hours). Using chillers that respond to the cooling demand in each room helps growers maintain a constant temperature for their plants.  Our chillers are also used in Cannabis oil extraction process (CO2, Butane, Methanol Alcohol, and other solvents). These oils are used to extract THC, CBC, and hundreds of other beneficial Medical and recreational uses. One cool thing we heard recently from one of our oil extraction customers is “JCY was able to provide a chiller system that actually cooled there process down to there needed temperatures unlike the last four chiller manufactures they worked with. They were very skeptical at first working with JCY, but after several days in the chiller set phase: they realized that JCY was knowledgeable and did provide the right equipment for this process.” Any fluctuations in temperature, especially one degree in a medical facility, can make a product or a set of ingredients to be used in a product worthless. It’s all about quality control. Why Hydroponics Cannabis growers and other plant cultivators often trust a complete environmental system that allows them to control both temperature and humidity within the greenhouse or interior building. One system that a grower might choose is a hydroponic system, which depends on the successful use of water to transfer heat in both cooling and heating systems. There may be multiple loops within the closed system, including the movement of chilled water and the movement of heated water through piping or tubing. A hydroponic system will require at least one chiller or cooling tower to cool the water in the chilling loop. The same system will depend on a heater to elevate the temperature of the water in the heating loop. Think of flower (which may actually be industrial grade hemp or marijuana) as a specialty product that demands tight control of the facility’s temperature and humidity. Even when two or more rooms in a growing facility have separate ventilation systems, they may share the same cooling system. Each room must be air-tight because leaks could permit the growth of mold. The same leaks can also lead to energy wastage, which defeats the purpose of using the controlled environment instead of an outdoor setting. Contact JC Younger Company Today We understand that there is a growing market for hemp and marijuana production projected to be in the multi-billions in the next two to three years in the U.S. alone. We strive to be able to provide a chiller system for you exact oil extraction process and or green rooms. The trend towards widespread use of cannabinoids for consumers in a variety of products, many of which are not yet regulated, makes it essential that cultivators rely on companies like ours for commercial grade chillers and cooling towers.
